Little Mary Sunshine ‘09

What better way to brighten the April skies than with the lighthearted Little Mary Sunshine? The performances are scheduled for April 24, 25, 26. Friday and Saturday at 8:00 PM with a Sunday Matinee at 2:00 PM. A musical spoof set in the early 1900’s the only part that might ring true to today is that the play opens with a government foreclosure on a mortgage. Rather than billions of bailout money, to set things right it only takes her friends: the Forest Rangers, the ladies from Eastchester finishing school, a Viennese opera singer, and a mischievous maid. The music of Little Mary Sunshine is not only a comic send-up of the singing cowboy and Mounties’ movies, but a collection of lovely hum-able tunes.Making their directorial debut with The Gatesinger Company will be Amdanda Lobaugh and Patti Montrois. Each has over 25 years theatrical experience, both on stage and behind the scenes. Their first venture in co-directing was with the Off-Monroe Players production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance in May, 2006, which involved many of the Gatesingers in their first appearance with OMP. Patti was bit by the theater bug as a freshman in high school, and is very happy they haven’t found a “cure for it” yet! She has spent 25+ years in community theater, being involved with such groups as the Henrietta Community Players, ACE Performing Arts Society, and the Off-Monroe Players, which considers her “home base.” Her experiences on stage include both chorus and lead roles, and her off-stage experience, in addition to directing, has involved many different facets including (but not limited to), set design/construction, publicity, house managing, and producing. For Amanda, growing up in a household with both parents being music teachers – she couldn’t help but end up where she is today. Liking to mix it up a bit between performing, directing, or just plain helping out she’s on the board of directors for Off-Monroe Players, is currently producing Yeoman of the Guards (Opening in May 2009!), is an OMP costume lending team coordinator, and is a devoted fund raiser for OMP (Bingo or die!) Past favorite roles for Amanda have included Reno (Anything Goes) for Webster Theatre Guild, Ms. Mona (Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) with ETC, numerous times as Sister Robert Anne in one version of Nunsense or another with several different theatre groups, and of course Gilbert and Sullivan is her original love. Patti says that the team of “Lobaugh and Montrois” was formed when she and Amanda were in a rehearsal standing near each other, and they both realized, “Hey, there’s an empty space up front, we should go stand there!” (They like to refer to this “self-blocking” as their directorial debut & boy, are we glad they took the initiative to stand in the empty spot!) To quote a line from one of their favorite G&S shows, “It’s too much happiness!”
